The Brotherhood of the Sacred Search

Where do we look? Everywhere!

The Brotherhood of the Sacred Search dates back to the Gbaji Wars when Naxili Garang failed in her attempts to break the trollkin curse. Although she was broken by her efforts (Trollpak 2nd edition p.16) she determined that through the acquisition of three mystical tools she might have a better chance of breaking the curse. "One is a set of adamantine claws which Gbaji wore when he ripped Korasting from shoulder to shin, for only the tools which wounded the goddess can ever heal her again. Second is the Otherworld Cloak which would allow Kyger Litor to avoid Gbaji’s deceitful embrace and deceive him the way he deceived her. The third is to rediscover the lost verse of a song which Kyger Litor used during pregnancy which will make their children once again into whole mistress trolls." (Trollpak 2nd edition p. 29).

Naxili recruited male followers to make up her brotherhood as they were and are much more expendable than female Uz. The Brotherhood operates out of the Castle of Lead and its trained members travel the world looking for any one of the three mystical tools.

Common Names: Seekers.

Form: Religious cult.

Cultural Context: All trolls would like to see the goals of the Brotherhood met but few actually believe they can succeed.

Ideology: "We will leave no stone unturned and make no enemies as we seek!"

Look and Feel: Solitary troll males carrying staffs and wearing long robes.

Purpose: To retrieve the three mystical items no matter what it takes!.

Headquarters: The Castle of Lead.

Reactions: Respect and admiration for their struggle.

Resources

Leader: Naxili Garang, although broken is still the leader of her brotherhood. She exists, a twisted crumpled wreck in the Castle of Lead, hanging onto her mortal existence waiting for the moment when all three of the mystic relics will be found.

Renowned Members: Few members live long enough to gain much notoriety. Boldash the Trainer is the most famous as he was out in the field for thirty years and is the only member in living memory to actually travel into a Mostali burrow and emerge again.

Membership: Unknown as many members who were thought to be dead are still alive and vice versa.

Other Contacts: Every troll organization will provide whatever assistance they can to the Brotherhood. The connection between Argan Argar and the Brotherhood is particularly strong.

Organization

Joining the Brotherhood is considered a death sentence by Uz. Eventually almost all members die, usually horribly, at the hands of some Uz-foe. There are always new members though as many male Uz see it as their duty to sacrifice themselves for such a good cause. Members by necessity operate alone for long periods of time and some find themselves away from Uz society for years at a time. Ironically members need to forget much of their trollish nature to join as they must put aside their natural animosity towards Aldryami and Mostali and all non-Uz. They have to be able to act diplomatically and tolerate or even embrace foreign ways. Unfortunately every single other entity in the universe is opposed to their goal so they have to operate secretly.

The Brotherhood hides their activities under the cloak of being followers of Argan Argar. The Argan Argar cult has no problems with this due to the importance of the quest. Many of the Brotherhood are actual members, though this is not a requirement, since members of that cult are most likely of all trolls to be found traveling in non-Uz lands.

Membership Keyword

Membership Requirements: Be a male Uz. Do not belong to a warlike cult like Karrg or Zorak Zoran.

Physical Abilities taught: Melee combat (Staff fighting)

Mental Abilities taught: Identify Adamantine; Sing; Tolerate other culture; Diplomacy; Speak [other] language; Speak Trade Talk; Identify Textile; Bargain.

Typical Personality Traits: Members of the Brotherhood are amazingly cosmopolitan for Uz even compared to followers of Argan Argar. They are trained to never react violently when possible (something very hard to teach Uz) and diplomatic methods to hopefully allow them to interact successfully with even darkness hating cultures. They always closely examine any cloaks they come across and will never interrupt a song.

Magic: Members are provided with a very rare spirit that gives them the innate ability to detect Adamantine. Unfortunately most of them go their entire lives without ever coming near any Adamantine. Or else they disappear into the nearest Mostali burrow and are never seen again. Members often pretend to follow Argan Argar and many are members of his cult though this isn’t a requirement.

Naxili Garang

Naxili Garang functions as a sort of guardian being for the Brotherhood. Her spirit remains within her mummified corpse where it waits until the three mystic items are recovered. She acts as the Brotherhood’s leader as well as its guardian being.

Method: She is imminent, providing magic her followers can use.

Form: Spirit residing in a mummified Mistress Race troll corpse.

Membership Requirements: Members of the Brotherhood have to put their lives at risk be seeking out the three mystic items.  Members are also "blessed" with the possession of a Spirit of Wanderlust which forces them to travel searching for the three sacred items.  Only a very accomplished and long standing member can resist their spirit.

Awareness Function: Naxili provides a spirit that can give the ability to Detect Adamantine to her followers.

Blessing Function: Naxili also provides a spirit that gives her followers the ability to Appear Friendly. This ability increases her followers ability to make friends and act diplomatically with non-Uz.

Defense Function: Naxili also provides a spirit that gives her followers the ability to Hide Motive. These spirits help her followers to disguise their true purpose from non-Uz.
