The Lovers - versions 1 and 2

This is background material originally written for the Whitewall Wiki and set before and during the Lunar seige of Whitewall.  See also Rana in Hell.

Version 1

Roganvarth Penterestsson and Rana Riverlocks are members of the Leaping River clan.   This clan is in a triaty relationship with two other Volsaxar clans, the Pine Martin and Reaching Stone.  Both followers of Heler they have known each other since infancy.  As boys they were friends under Voriof.  Roganvarth is known as the thrice-born, thrice-sworn. This is because of the three mighty oaths he has sworn in his life.  His first oath was when he was a boy when he swore a mighty oath to let no harm come to his flock. This was an act of bravado to compete with his friend Rana but he kept this oath. When the pair had passed out of boyhood and into adulthood they became rivals for the hand of fair Ortossa Maltasdotter of the Pine Martin Clan.  Unusually this rivalry took place before any of them had been initiated into an adult cult.  Ortossa could not choose between the pair and their parents foolishly left the matter alone.  The rivalry grew worse and worse with the former friends trying to outdo the other in acts of bravery unheard of for those not yet initiated. It was not that Ortossa was playing the lads against she other, she could honestly not choose between them and unwittingly led them on. Everyone knew nothing good could come from this but their parents still failed to act.  And then one day something happened that none of the three has ever spoken about. They had snuck off into the woods for a picnic and something happened there to bring matters to a head.  None of them were happy with the results.

Roganvarth fled his broken heart by being reborn as a woman.  She became a follower of Yuhurol the Golden Ram and swore a mighty oath to do no harm and heal all. She kept this oath. Her fame as a healer grew ever greater and she travelled far trying to leave the past behind her.  Rana too fled her grief by being reborn as a woman and was initiated into Tarena the Blue Woman where she soon became a devoted follower of Tarena the Blue Woman.  She too travelled far learning many secrets.  She, also known as the Raindancer is full of grace and fair of face.  She can dance on the rain drops, braids river and cloud spirits and daimones and spells into her long, uncut hair and can quench the strongest thirsts.  The only one of the three to stay with her clan was Ortossa.  There she joined the cult of Mahome, married young and did her clan proud.

Recently Roganvarth has reappeared, no longer a woman but now a man.  He has long untamed hair and watery tattoos and a great beauty.  He has joined Ereltharol the Black Ram and has sworn a mighty oath to bring harm to Heler's enemies.  He has come to Whitewall to help Broyan defend it and has won favour with his clan despite his long absence.  Rana too has come to Whitewall to aid Broyan.  The pair were reunited there and they realized that they were the same breath from separate lungs.  They were inseparable despite the forbidden nature of their love.

During the Shargashi assault on the Tor Rana disappeared and was presumed dead.  Also presumed dead was Ortossa's husband Kollos Enestakusson the nephew of the Reaching Stone chief.  Roganvarth was distraught and wreaked much venegeance upon the Lunars.  Eventually his and Ortossa's paths crossed again and they fell in love again.  Meanwhile Rana was not dead but only imprisoned in Hell.  There she broke free and fled eventually returning to Whitewall fighting her way through the Lunars only to walk in on Roganvarth and Ortossa's wedding.

The Lovers - version 2

He is the thrice-born, thrice-sworn. He started off life as a boy and joined the cult of Voriof where he swore a mighty oath to let no harm come to any of his flock. He kept this oath. Then she, still Roganvarth, became a follower of Yuhurol the Golden Ram where she swore a mighty oath to do no harm and heal all. She kept this oath. Finally in this time of trouble he has joined Ereltharol the Black Ram. He has sworn a mighty oath to bring harm to all enemies of Heler.

She, Rana Riverlocks also known as the Raindancer, is a devoted follower of Tarena the Blue Woman, full of grace and fair of face.  She can dance on the rain drops, braids river and cloud spirits and daimones and spells into her long, uncut hair and can quench the strongest thirsts.

She and Roganvarth have known each other all their lives.  They have been in turn friends, rivals and now lovers.  As young boys they were first friends and then rivals.

Both sought the hand of the beauteous Ortossa.  She played them like an angler with a fish for seasons before finally choosing Rana.  Roganvanth fled his heart by being reborn as a woman.  Rana was happy for a while but Ortossa proved to be a false trifler.  He too was reborn as a woman and wandered long and far learning great magics. Then she returned to her birth stead where she met Roganvarth now a follower of Ereltharol.  There they realized they were the same breath from separate lungs and they have been inseparable ever since.   They have heeded [Broyan]'s call to arms and have come to [Whitewall] to help.   Roganvarth has sworn his mighty oath and Rana holds close their mighty love.
