Lodriland - Politics

Back to Lodriland

Politics is as common in Lodriland is it anywhere.  Factions within the guilds battle for control, the guilds vie for supremacy amongst each other and the various army units contend for a more dominant role in decision making.  The Priest-King and his priests try and remain aloof from all this but even within the priesthood there are factions vying for dominance.

The people are organized in guilds that follow specific traditions, soldier, farmer, entertainer, scholar, crafts, servant, and healer.  Everyone is subject to the leadership of their local guild council for day to day activities.  These local guilds councils are responsible to a major guild council which has its headquarters in one of the four towns or Badrul depending on the guild (see the Geography page).  The co-ordination of the communal life of a community is the responsibility of a town council made up of local guild heads plus a mayor appointed from among their number by the Priest-King.  Each guild council is led by a head known as the Chief Guildsman. At the top of the hierarchy is the Elder Chief Guildsman. Over them is the Lord Mayor who co-ordinates mundane affairs for all of Lodriland.

How does this affect Joe Lodrili?

Joe Lodrili does what he/she is told to do.  They are told what to do day to day by their local guild council which gets its orders from the head guild council which gets its orders from the Priest-King's Council (as overseen by the Lord Mayor).   Practically speaking Lodrili do what their fathers and mothers have been doing for over a millenium.  Innovation and individuality are not really rewarded.  How is Joe Lodrili punished for stepping out of line or failing to pull their own weight?   They're given a warning first, then a good talking too (followed by ostracism), followed by the ultimate punishment, i.e. they can no longer get food or goods from the guild's warehouses.  There are no bandits or thieves among the Lodrili for this reason.

Army Organization

The army page descibes their organization in some detail.   You can see their command structure in table 1.

Table 1.
Mundane Administrative Structure The Army

Ordinary person

Local guild council Common soldier

Local guildmaster Corporal (squad)

Mayor Sargeant (group)

Guild council Lieutenant (company)
Elder Chief Guildsman Captain (unit)
  Major (battle group)
Lord Mayor General
Priest-King

The five army battle groups are constantly jockeying for position.   Badrul is the plum position since it's closest to the reins of power.  After that Oria's Love is the number two position and Horizon is lowest in favour.

The Guilds

There are 11 guilds in Lodriland.  Each guild has its own administrative structure culminating in the person of the Elder Chief Guildsman (who can easily be a woman.   The actual Lodrili term is genderless).
